Research Related Software
Here's a rundown of my favorite research related software along with some screen shots.
#1 JabRef is a Java based tool for tending to your .bib file. Try it without downloading anything to your computer.
#2 Emacs editor for Latex. A very neat interface with Bibtex.
#3 LibX, a Firefox plugin to navigate the university's library.
Linux
Moved by Richard Heck'sevangelizing I installed Ubuntu, a Linux based distro on my laptop. It didn't go as planned. I lost XP forever (my data was safely backed up). It took me a while to get used to it but I'm content now.
Other Software
I used to use 
for email, but I have now switched entirely to Gmail with the Better Gmail 2 extension for Firefox. You can find out how to use Gmail with your .edu account here.
I have yet to use a better browser than
. Skype for chat, audio and video.
